Rakul Preet Singh says her name is a blend of her parents’ names: “Created a combination of their love”

A recent clip from Rakul Preet Singh’s interview with Shubhankar Mishra has started making the rounds on social media, drawing attention to the unique story behind the actress’ name. Rakul, who is currently seen in De De Pyaar De 2, had spoken about how her parents created her name by combining their own.

In the resurfaced snippet, Rakul explained, “My dad’s name is Kulwinder and my mom’s name is Rajinder. Rajinder + Kulwinder became Rakul… the first alphabets. They did this back in 1990. And if you notice, there’s no one else with this name—I haven’t heard of another Rakul so far. So they created a combination of their love, like their daughter is the symbol of that.”

While many found the story sweet, social media users were quick to point out that the idea of blending parents’ names to form a child’s isn’t new. Several netizens chimed in with examples from the entertainment industry and beyond. Some comments also focused on the terminology, with a user saying, “First alphabets nai baba, first letters! Kyun kisi ko dono ka difference nai pata!”

Others referenced how common the practice already was in the 90s. “Raveena was already in news then & we knew her name was a mix of her dad’s and mom’s names—Ravi + Veena. So many people planned their kids' names like this.” Another pointed out, “Amisha Patel and Ashmit Patel—Amit and Asha Patel.” Another user added, “Genelia is also a name combination of her parents’ names.” And in true internet fashion, someone joked, “Kurla is also an option.”

Despite the light teasing, the clip has renewed interest in Rakul’s personal anecdotes as she continues her busy year in films. The actress is currently seen in De De Pyaar De 2, her second release of 2025 after Mere Husband Ki Biwi, which came out in February. Ahead, she has an ambitious slate with Nitesh Tiwari’s two-part Ramayana, where she will be playing Surpanakha, and Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, co-starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi.
