Rajpal Yadav remembers Asrani: “He was a complete actor in himself”

You and Asrani shared a lot of screen space? There was a very fortunate coincidence with Asraniji. We were both favourites of Priyadarshanji, so we ended up working together in most of his films — around 10 to 15 of them. There were other films too where we shared the screen.

What was your impression of Asrani? I would like to say just one line about Asraniji. Amidst such terrific performances in Priyadarshanji’s films, he was the unforgettable jailor from the British era in Sholay. I had the good fortune of watching that performance as a child in my village. Later in life, after studying and struggling, I got the opportunity to work alongside him — it truly felt like destiny.

A dream come true? Absolutely. I got a chance to learn so much from Asraniji — his behaviour, his spontaneity, his timing. You could say he was a complete actor in every sense. Just before his passing, we worked together on Bhoot Bangla, which turned out to be his last film. What an honour for that village boy who once watched him in Sholay to finally share the screen with him!

So the feeling is indescribable? Yes, it’s a mix of sadness and inspiration. The sorrow of losing Asraniji is deep, but the happiness of having known and worked with him balances it somehow. He lived and breathed cinema till his last day. There can never be a replacement for Asraniji. As long as Indian cinema exists, if 100 great actors are remembered, Asraniji will definitely be one of them.

Your closing thoughts? I salute Asraniji. Wherever he is now, I’m sure he’s entertaining the angels up there. I just want to say — you will live for thousands of years, Asraniji. Love you forever.
